Omar Abdirashid Sharmarke resigned as the prime minster of Somalia Tuesday amid problems with President Sheikh Sharif Ahmed. Sharmarke, 50, announced his resignation inside Sharif’s residence. Sharif was present when Sharmarke delivered his statement.
"After considering the political crisis within the government and the worsening security in Somalia, I have decided to resign from my post as prime minister," Sharmarke said.
Sharmarke became prime minister in February 2009, a month after Sharif was elected president.
Sharif appointed deputy prime minister Abdi Wahid Goonjeeh to temporarily fill Sharmarke’s post until he nominated a new prime minister.
