History of the Sunflower
Sunflowers originated in North America more than 8,000 years ago and are believed to be one of the first crops gown by Native Americans.
Grown around the globe for centuries, Sunflowers have been used in a variety of different purposes ranging from culinary to medicinal. From uses in cooking oil to paint and medicinal treatments to biodiesel fuel – the sunflower is one of the most versatile flowers we have today.
Native Americans used Sunflower seeds for thickening soups and stems and the hull (shell) was used to make a drink similar to coffee. The hull and petals were also used to make dyes and the oil for cooking and medicinal remedies and ointments to treat snakebites and other wounds.
Fresh-cut Sunflowers need plenty of water and care. Cut the stems to a desired length under running water using a sharp knife or scissors. Fill a tall, clean vase with fresh water (adding a floral preservative helps to prevent bacteria and growth in the water and prolongs the life of your Sunflowers) and remove any foliage from the stems that may become submerged in the water.
Keep your Sunflowers in a cool area, away from direct sunlight. Change the water in the vase every one-to-two days, re-cutting the stems each time and removing any dried or drooping leaves for a longer vase life.
Fun Facts about Sunflowers
Some Sunflowers can grow as tall as 10-feet high with a flower head spanning as wide as 12 inches in diameter. The head of the Sunflower (brown center) hosts hundreds of tiny flowers called florets. The yellow petals are actually protective leaves that cover the center of the head while it is growing.
While the Sunflower certainly resembles the sun it was named after, these charming flowers don’t actually “follow the sun” like most people believe. The face is constantly rotating during the day. In a field, Sunflowers point their faces toward the east, by noon the faces are pointing straight up, and by evening, to the west.
