Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid announced on Tuesday that 3-time Pro Bowler Michael Vick will be the starting quarterback for the Eagles this season. "When someone is playing at the level Michael Vick is playing, you have
to give him an opportunity," Reid said. "This isn't about Kevin Kolb's play. You're talking about Michael Vick as one the best quarterbacks in the NFL right now." Kolb was expected by many to be the Eagles' starting quarterback for 2010. This expectation was strengthened in April when former Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb was traded to the Washington Redskins. But things are a bit different now. Kolb missed the the last six quarters with the Eagles because of a concussion, leaving Vick to fill in. Apparently Reid and other Eagles staff were so impressed by Vick's performance that they have decided Vick should start this season, not Kolb. But, says Reid, "Kevin is fine. It's not an injury-related issue. It's not
about judging him. He's going to be a championship-caliber quarterback." According to ESPN's sources, Eagles personnel met early Monday to review the film of Sunday night's game against the Detroit Lions. After studying the footage, they determined that Vick will be a better fit. They also apparently expressed some concern that Kolb would be at risk of receiving another concussion if he were to start. "Michael did an exceptional job and my job is to evaluate the players,"
Reid said. "It's my obligation to make the proper decision... His accelerated play was brilliant. This is what I think is right. He's back and maybe even a little better." Vick, who is expected to give a press conference later on Wednesday, told ESPN's Sal Paolantonio in a text message that "I'm humbled and I just want to win games." (Sources: ESPN.com)
