”The solar phenomenon is moving up a notch, with PV solar power poised to edge ahead in the renewable energy race. Renewable energy leader PG&E, a company which delivers some of the nation's cleanest energy to 15 million people in northern and central California, recently entered into two utility-scale, photovoltaic solar power contracts for a total of 800 megawatts of renewable energy - a project that would catapult the United States into the world leadership for solar photovoltaic power production…
“Along with OptiSolar's 550 MW of thin-film PV solar power, PG&E also signed a contract with SunPower Corp. subsidiary High Plains Ranch II L.L.C., for 250 MW of high-efficiency PV solar power. SunPower’s plant will include single-axis tracking, which automatically orientates the solar panels toward the sun as it moves across the sky during the day…
“According to Mike Taylor, Solar Electric Power Assoc.'s (SEPA) director of research, OptiSolar and SunPower's solar project configurations represent competing technology advancements they have seen in the photovoltaic industry recently. As with SunPower's technology, Taylor said it is the highest commercial efficiency in the industry which commands a premium price; but with the tracking technology, they are aiming to produce more kilowatt-hours per solar panel…”
