True Story - Email Marketing Success

Everybody loves a great story. Whether it's funny, unusual, exciting, adventurous, or educational, we all like to be entertained and basically, that's what a great story does. The key word here is "great." If a story is not great, it's really not worth telling and certainly not worth taking the time to listen to or read. In fact, I've read some email marketing stories online that were so bad, so poorly written, I had to hold myself back from firing off a slam response email (usually there are many others who don't hold back).

So please, you aspiring email marketing story writers out there, consider your audience as you craft your selling tools of wit or adventure. If you really want to be a successful email marketing entrepreneur, don't send out some lame, boring, who-the-heck-cares type of tale to your list of potential customers. Your list is the life-blood of your email marketing business, and sending out emails full of crap will do irreparable damage to your customer base. Your goal is to increase the size of your list through opt-ins and this sort of irresponsible behavior will have the opposite effect.
"Well, what can I do to make sure my email marketing stories are great and not lame?" ...Ah, glad you asked!

Let's consider another marketing platform that has a high degree of financial success: television. Think about your favorite TV shows and why they're your favorites. They're either hilarious, awesomely interesting, over-the-top shocking, or a combination of the three. Whatever the reason, they obviously attract viewers or they wouldn't be on the air to begin with, much less return for multiple seasons.

Ok, not trying to bust your bubble here, but TV programming does not exist solely for your viewing pleasure, in fact that's way down the list. Television is all about the money. Great shows have great stories, attract great amounts of viewers, and therefore hold great marketing value. Big corporate advertisers spend big bucks for 30 second chunks of airtime that sits directly before, during, and after these great story TV shows.

Many of these successful shows and movies are based on true stories and events that actually occurred, and often get the highest ratings. That's why reality shows like Survivor or The Biggest Loser, or talk shows like Ellen or Oprah, or Sports programming, or Late-Night TV are so popular and successful - people can relate to true, real-life events. They crave it. They're addicted to it. (For those of you who for whatever reason don't watch TV, please don't take offense but you are not part of mainstream society - but I'll bet you still love a great story!)

How does this apply to your Internet Email Marketing Business?

The principles are exactly the same - You want to make money, you have a product or service to sell, you need to attract customers to buy your stuff, you send out mass emails to contact your list of potential customers, and... here it comes... you present a great story which entices your list into opening and reading your email (which also includes an offer to buy your product or service that you've somehow related to your great story.)

That's the process in a nutshell.
