Nevada Governor Jim Gibbons was injured Tuesday afternoon in a horseback riding accident. A spokesman for Gibbons said he was thrown from his horse while riding on a private ranch near Pyramid Lake, which is located about 30 miles north of Reno.
"It got spooked landed on some hard ground. Anybody who has ever had a hard fall or anybody that's ever fell off a horse knows the kind of pain that's involved and that's the kind of pain the governor is feeling right now," says spokesperson Daniel Burns.
Gibbons, 65, broke his pelvis in two places and is undergoing surgery. While Gibbons is in surgery, State Senator Mike Schneider will temporarily assume authority as governor.
