10 Injured in East Jerusalem Funeral Riots
Ten people including three police officers were injured and several vehicles including police cars and buses were set on fire and destroyed as riots erupted at a Palestinian funeral procession.
The Palestinian civilian was killed earlier today by an armed Israeli security guard, one of the Israeli settlers in the Palestinian region of Silwan. The riots began when the participants in the funeral procession started throwing stones at vehicles and officers of the Israeli authorities in protest to the killing.
The nearly 1,000 attendants destroyed vehicles including buses and a police car in their protest by setting them ablaze.
Israeli Inspector General of Police David Cohen reached the riot scene and deployed large forces to suppress the protesters.
The security guard responsible for killing the Palestinian has also been arrested and is being questioned by the authorities.
The officials of the security company who employed the guard said that the killing was done in self defense, as a group of Palestinians threw rocks at the vehicle of the guard while he was driving in the outskirts of the Israeli settlement in the Palestinian territory.
“The guard exited his vehicle and shot in the air and then shot at one of the people after he felt that they wanted to kidnap him.”, said Ofer Rosenman, the manager.
The security company employing the guard is owned by the Israeli Housing Office and has the responsibility of protecting the lives and structures of the Israeli settlers in the Palestinian territory.
