Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf Announces Resignation

Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has announced he will resign as his country’s leader rather than face the impeachment charges that have been leveled against him by the coalition government.

Earlier this month the coalition government formalized a deal that would level impeachment charges against Musharraf and those charges had been finalized just hours before the president announced on national television that he would resign.

Musharraf rose to power after a bloodless military coup in 1999 in which Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was deposed. As president, Musharraf quickly became an ally of the United States and was seen as a major partner in the war on terrorism but within his own country he was quickly cast as the source of growing violence.

One month after winning re-election in October 2007 Musharraf set his own downfall in motion when he declared a state of emergency while dismissing and jailing several judges and lawyers. He also suspended the chief justice prior to the judiciary’s ruling on the October election.

By February Musharraf suffered a major defeat to his presidency when parliamentary elections overwhelmingly favored the two main opposition parties. Talks quickly turned to impeachment charges against Musharraf declaring he had violated the Pakistani constitution and was guilty of gross misconduct.

Musharraf declared he would resign before he ever faced impeachment charges and on Monday he made good on those words. While conceding that he had made mistakes as president, Musharaff adamantly denied the charges against him saying, “not a single charge can be proved.”
