Russia has said they have begun pulling troops out of the conflict zone inside Georgia yet evidence of that has been hard to uncover as forces remain inside the city of Gori and short-range missiles have reportedly been installed in South Ossetia.
According to Moscow, forces would fall back from Georgia territory yet they have not recognized South Ossetia as being part of that territory.
While troops remain in South Ossetia the more troubling aspect of the Russian presence is just outside the Georgia capital of Tbilisi where forces appear to be set in. Russia has said they would keep forces in place as peacekeepers yet according to the ceasefire agreement signed on Saturday Russia’s President Dmitry Medvedev had agreed to the return of troops to pre-conflict areas.
Many of those troops remain in Gori where Russia has complete control. Moscow has maintained that Russia would use Gori as a buffer between Tbilisi and South Ossetia.
The peace deal signed by Medvedev and Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili outlined that both sides would pull their troops back to their positions prior to August, 7, the day fighting broke out in South Ossetia.
