Thousands Attend Bernie Mac's Funeral in Chicago on Saturday

The funeral for Bernie Mac was held Saturday at the House of Hope church in his hometown of Chicago. Thousands of mourners came to give their condolences to the famed comedian and his family.

Bernie Mac died last Saturday due to complications of pneumonia after a visit to Northwestern Hospital. Mac was 50 years old,

Mac, whose real name is Bernard Jeffrey McCullough, got his national break after being in "The Original Kings of Comedy", along with Cedric the Entertainer, Steve Harvey and D.L Hughley, all three of which began the funeral service as the first speakers.

The Bernie Mac funeral had additional high-profile guests like Samuel L. Jackson, Mac's co-star in the upcoming Soul Men, and Oceans co-star Don Cheadle. Chris Rock, Mayor Richard Daly and Reverend Jesse Jackson were also in attendance.

Oprah Winfrey, Senator Barack Obama, Congresswoman Maxine Walters and Andy Garcia sent statements that were read aloud during the proceedings due to their physical absence at the fineral.

More than 6,000 people eventually made it to the funeral. Several visitors camped out in front of the church at 7:45 a.m. for the noon funeral.

The funeral arrangements wasere filled with musical tributes, including one by Mac's favorite singer Rachelle Ferrell. The death of Isaac Hayes, who had a cameo in Soul Men and died the day after Mac, was also acknowledged.
