Abbott Laboratories announced Wednesday a recall for 5 million containers of its Similac infant formula due to possible contamination with small beetles or larvae. The recall includes only powder formula.
Ingesting the beetles or larvae could cause stomach ache or digestive problems, but won’t cause any “immediate health risks” according to the Food and Drug Administration.
The affected powder formula was manufactured at a plant in Sturgis, Michigan and sold in the United States, Puerto Rico, Guam and some Caribbean countries. An Abott spokesperson says the insects were discovered last week in one section of the Sturgis plant. That section was “immediately shut down” and an investigation was launched, according to the spokesperson.
The affected products were sold in 8 ounce, 12.4 ounce and 12.9 ounce plastic containers and cans. The formula can be returned to Abbott for a full refund.
