A Nicaraguan diplomat based in New York was found with his throat slashed in his Bronx apartment Thursday morning. The man has been identified as 34-year-old Cesar Mercado, a senior consulate officer. Mercado’s body was found around 10:30 by his driver, police say.
Police Department Commissioner Paul Browne says it is unclear if Mercado’s death was a homicide or suicide. A knife was found at the scene.
"We have absolutely no clue what would be the reasons for what would apparently be a horrendous murder, (but) forensics will tell the story. It's premature to say (if it is a murder),” says Danilo Rosales Diaz, deputy permanent representative of Nicaragua to the U.S.
Mercado had worked as a diplomat in the United States for the past 8 years.
