Sen. John McCain will announce his vice presidential candidate on August 29, according to reports on Tuesday.
McCain will make the announcement during a huge rally in Dayton, Ohio next Friday. The rally is expected to draw 10,000 people from the battleground state. The rally will be located at Ervin J. Nutter Center, a sports and entertainment complex at Wright State University.
McCain is scheduled to appear with his running mate at a similar large-scale event in Pennsylvania shortly thereafter.
The VP announcement comes just days before the 2008 Republican National Convention (RNC) begins in Minneapolis, MN on Sept. 1 and the day after the highly-anticipated speech of Democratic nominee Sen. Barack Obama as he accepts the presidential nomination on Thursday at the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver.
Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty are said to be the two frontrunners. Former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge was on McCain's short list but received backlash due to his pro-choice views.
Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal were also considered frontrunners early in the campaign. However, Palin has not truly expressed interest in the position, while Jindal has declined the invitation publicly.
