Iranian President Holds U.S. Responsible For 9/11

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has accused elements within the US government of staging the attacks of 9/11 to strengthen the ailing American economy.  During a UN summit, Ahmadinejad said that the majority of people believe that it was the US government that orchestrated the 9/11 attacks. His statement has ignited fury in the US.

There is an assumption that “some segments within the U.S. government orchestrated the attack to reverse the declining American economy and its grips on the Middle East, in order also to save the Zionist regime”, Ahmadinejad said, sparking representatives from the US and European countries to walk out of the UN's General Assembly.

Ahmadinejad further added that the majority of Americans and other countries and politicians believe in this theory. He then called on the UN to conduct an investigation to find out what actually happened on September 11.

“It is proposed that the United Nations set up an independent fact-finding group for the event of September 11 so that in the future, expressing views about it is not forbidden,” said the Iranian president.

He also blamed the US of using 9/11 to justify wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, in addition to intimidating Tehran over its nuclear plan while maintaining its own nuclear arsenal.

Ahmadinejad, however, pointed out that his country would be open to negotiations over its nuclear program given that they are based on respect and justice.
