Arguably more famous for his string of high-profile marriages than his music career, popular 1950’s music legend Eddie Fisher, has died aged 82. Fisher died in his home in Berkley on Wednesday, his daughter Tricia Leigh Fisher confirming complications from hip surgery the cause of death.
Born in Philadelphia in 1928, Fisher recorded
his first hits in the early 50’s and through his career recorded multiple top
40 hits and four number 1 hits songs. Although loved for his music, Fisher’s
charm and good looks made headlines when he paired up with ‘America’s
Sweetheart’ Debbie Reynolds.
The pair married in 1955 only for Fisher to
leave Reynolds three years later to marry Elizabeth Taylor. The scandal of the
union, and his messy divorce from Reynolds, propelled both Fisher and Taylor
into stardom. This second union however, was also short-lived, with a divorce
in 1962 after which Fisher suffered a nervous breakdown; Taylor went on to marry long-time love
Richard Burton.
Fisher had a third failed marriage to Connie Stevens and was later to acknowledge this time in his life was a battle with drug addiction. Despite his personal upheavals, Fisher continued to produce chart-topping music into the late 1960’s and appeared numerous times on television shows, both of which earned him stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Two more marriages followed, with his last wife, Betty Lin predeceasing him by nine years. Fisher has four children who he leaves behind.
