Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones (D-OH) Dies Suddenly of Aneurysm

Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones (D-OH), the first black woman to represent Ohio in Congress, died Wednesday of an aneurysm. She was 58.

Tubbs Jones suffered the aneurysm while driving her car in Cleveland Heights on Tuesday. The congresswoman was removed from life support at 12:19 p.m. at the Huron Hospital, a satellite of the Cleveland Clinic and was pronounced dead soon thereafter.

Tubbs Jones had been driving erratically when she was spotted by a police officer. Her vehicle then crossed from the northbound lanes across the southbound lanes, according to a statement from police.

The officer pulled a cruiser across the roadway to warn oncoming traffic. The officer reached her vehicle and found Tubbs Jones in medical distress, the statement said.

Tubbs Jones becomes the third African-American woman in Congress to die in the deadliest term of Congress in over 20 years. Eight members of Congress have died during this term.

Tubbs Jones, who began her term in Congress in 1998, was one of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's biggest supporters during the primaries and was a co-chair on Clinton's campaign. She announced her support for Barack Obama in June and was a superdelegate at next week's Democratic National Convention in Denver.

Tubbs Jones, who represents the heavily Democratic 11th District, chairs the ethics committee in the House. She was also the first black woman to serve on the powerful Ways and Means Committee and served as the chairwoman of the platform committee at the Democratic National Convention.

Tubbs Jones is survived by her son Mervyn Jones II and was preceded in death by her husband of 27 years, Mervyn Jones Sr., who passed away in 2003. Her sudden death was very surprising and shocking.
