Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones in Critical Condition After Aneurysm

Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones (D-OH), the first black woman to represent Ohio in Congress, is in critical condition after suffering an aneurysm Wednesday.

There were conflicting reports about her status as Fox News reported that Tubbs Jones had died. However, based on recent reports, Tubbs Jones is alive but in critical condition.

Several media outlets have reported that Tubbs Jones is brain dead, but it is not completely certain that these reports are correct.

Doctors have confirmed that she has very limited brain function and the aneurysm is in an inoperable location of her brain.

Tubbs Jones suffered the aneurysm while driving her car in Cleveland Heights on Tuesday. The congresswoman was taken to Huron Hospital, a satellite of the Cleveland Clinic, where she remains hospitalized.

Tubbs Jones had been driving erratically when she was spotted by a police officer. Her vehicle then crossed from the northbound lanes across the southbound lanes, according to a statement from police.

The officer pulled a cruiser across the roadway to warn oncoming traffic. The officer reached her vehicle and found Tubbs Jones in medical distress, the statement said.

Tubbs Jones, who began her term in Congress in 1998, was one of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's biggest supporters during the primaries and was a co-chair on Clinton's campaign. She announced her support for Barack Obama in June and was a superdelegate at next week's Democratic National Convention in Denver.

Tubbs Jones, who represents the heavily Democratic 11th District, chairs the ethics committee in the House. She was also the first black woman to serve on the powerful Ways and Means Committee and served as the chairwoman of the platform committee at the Democratic National Convention.
