Military Leader of FARC Killed in Raid

Colombia President Juan Manuel Santos announced Thursday that the no. 2 leader of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) was killed in a military raid this week. Victor Julio Suarez Rojas, also known as Jorge Briceno Suarez, was the military leader for FARC.

"This is the biggest blow the FARC has suffered in its history," Santos said of Rojas’ death. "To the rest of the FARC, we are going after them. We are not going to rest."

Defense Minister Rodrigo Rivera said 7 rebel soldiers were confirmed dead after the raid, which occurred at “the mother of all FARC camps.” Santos estimated at least 20 soldiers were killed. Colombian troops are still recovering bodies.

Rivera said the camp was 1,000 feet long and included a bunker and 13 surrounding satellite camps. Among the items recovered at the camp were 20 computers, 68 USB drives and 3 external hard drives.

This is the second major raid on a FARC camp in the past week. On Sunday, the military carried out an airstrike on a camp located in a jungle area near San Miguel, Putumayo. Sixto Antonio Cabana Guillen, a top FARC commander, died in that raid. Guillen was wanted in the United States for helping control the production and distribution of cocaine in the U.S. and other countries. At least 27 others were killed in the bombing.
