The Spanish government has confirmed that 153 people have died after Spanair Flight 5022 crashed after briefly lifting off the Madrid airport runway before landing and swerving off the tarmac and bursting into flames.
There was also a confirmation that 22 passengers survived the crash, accounting for all 175 aboard the Spanair flight destined for the Canary Islands. While the Spanish government has placed the number at 175 the airline has put the official number on the plane as 173.
According to reports the plane’s left engine caught fire leading to the pilot’s attempt to land. After hitting the ground the plane ran into a field of heavy brush and trees before splitting in two and igniting. Rescue workers had difficulty accessing the plane due to the intense heat.
Spanair published a press release on the company website that noted, “Spanair regrets to confirm that 164 passengers and 9 crew were on board its flight JK5022, which was involved in an accident in Madrid today.The accident occurred at 14:45 local time during take off, aircraft type MD-82.”
