Flooding in Nigeria Causes $29 Million in Damage

Nigerian officials say flooding in the northern part of the country caused about $29 million in damage and left more than 2 million people displaced. Umar Kyari, the director of press affairs for Jigawa state, said the flooding happened last month after flood gates on the Challawa and Tiga dams were opened to release rising waters along the Niger River.

"They went ahead and opened them and the water washed away anything in its way," says Kyari, adding that “poor management of the water” led to the situation.

The government moved those in the affected area to safe ground. So far, no injuries or deaths have been reported.
