Stocks Lower on Financial Worries, Rising Oil, and Weak LEI Data

Stocks fell Thursday as another rise in oil prices fanned inflation concerns and as investors grew more anxious about the financial sector.

The New York-based Conference Board's said Thursday its monthly forecast of future economic activity fell 0.7 percent in July, far more than the consensus estimate of a 0.2 percent decline by Wall Street economists surveyed by Thomson/IFR.

The decline was the steepest in the index this year. The largest drag on the index was the decline in building permits, followed in order by stock prices, rising unemployment claims, a tightened money supply and falling manufacturers' orders for consumer goods.

Oil prices shot up $6 a barrel Thursday, rising to the highest level in two weeks as escalating tensions with Russia stoked fears of a disruption of energy shipments to Western countries.

Light, sweet crude for October delivery jumped $6 to $121.56 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. It was crude's highest trading level since Aug. 7.

In midmorning trading, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 78.41, or 0.69 percent, to 11,339.02. The Dow managed a moderate gain on Wednesday.

Broader stock indicators also declined Thursday. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 5.62, or 0.44 percent, to 1,258.92, and the Nasdaq composite index fell 19.12, or 0.80 percent, to 2,369.96.

Bond prices fell. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note, which moves opposite its price, rose to 3.84 percent from 3.80 percent late Wednesday.

The dollar was lower against other major currencies, while gold prices rose.

Today’s SmallCapVoice.com Hot Stock to Watch:

GWS Technologies, Inc. (OTC BB: GWSI) is today’s hot stock to watch.

GWS Technologies, Inc., an alternative energy company developing and marketing microgeneration solar and wind-powered renewable energy products and solutions, announced that it has entered into an agreement with Urban Green Energy, Inc. to distribute its incredibly advanced 2nd generation 4kW vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT), the first in a line which will include several other sizes, including a 1kW VAWT available this fall.

The 4kW VAWT uses composite materials to create a wind turbine that is, according to Urban Green Energy’s CEO Nick Blitterswyk, “quieter than a human whisper” while providing enough energy to power an average American home. “Our second generation line combines functionality and visual appeal,” Mr. Blitterswyk said, “and was designed for peak energy output in an urban environment.”

One of the advantages in placing wind turbines on a residence is the efficiency gained in point-of-use electrical generation. Typically, energy is generated far from where it is used, which requires utilities to build transmission lines to deliver power to the consumer, who may be hundreds of miles away. Not only is energy lost in transmission, but environmental and other groups have blocked the construction of new transmission lines, citing negative effects on the environment.

“This is an aesthetically dazzling product that is remarkably quiet and efficient,” said GWS Technologies Vice President Michael Coskun. “It will help our customers save money while contributing to a cleaner environment.”

Installed wind power grew a staggering 45% in 2007, and the U.S. Department of Energy predicted that the United States should be able to derive a full 20% of its electric demand from wind power alone by 2030. A recent market research report predicts that the market for wind turbines will grow to $16 Billion by the end of 2015.

“The increasing demand for sustainable, non-polluting energy has opened tremendous opportunities for microgeneration products and technologies that let people generate their own clean power,” Mr. Reincke said. “Our goal is to help consumers and small businesses become part of the energy solution.”

Investors have shown a renewed appetite for alternative energy stocks after the announcement last week by Billionaire investor T. Boone Pickens that he sold his entire stake in Yahoo, Inc. and now plans to make the U.S. "energy independent" by using wind power and natural gas powered vehicles has sparked investor interest in green energy stocks. Pickens is sinking billions of dollars into a new wind farm in Texas. It is likely to become the biggest in the world, producing enough power for the equivalent of 1.3 million homes.
