Byrnes (Duncan, SC) Tops USA Today Super 25 Preseason High School Football Rankings

Byrnes (Duncan, S.C.) is No. 1 in USA Today's preseason Super 25 high school football rankings, which were released on Thursday.

Byrnes, which has won five of the past six 4A South Carolina titles, finished the season as the No. 13 team in the USA Today's top 25 rankings. The team, which finished 15-0 last season, returns 17 starters, including junior running back Marcus Lattimore and junior quarterback Chas Dodd.

Lattimore rushed for 1,884 yards and 26 touchdowns last season as a sophomore and scored a 129.87 on Nike's SPARQ system, garnering the third-best score in the nation. Dodd threw for 3,202 yards and 32 TDs last season.

Lattimore is the most highly touted player for Byrnes since Willy Korn, the current back-up Clemson quarterback, graduated in 2007.

Byrnes plays a tough out-of-state schedule this season as they play Georgia 5A runner-up North Gwinnett (Suwanee) on Aug. 29, Lincoln (Tallahassee, Fla.) on Sept. 19, and Florida 2B champion Pahokee on Oct. 3.

Nine teams from last year's final Super 25 rankings return to the list this season, including No. 1 Byrnes (Duncan, S.C.), No. 4 Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey, N.J.), No. 5 Long Beach (Calif.) Poly and No. 7 De La Salle (Concord, Calif.), who has finished No. 1 a record five times.

No. 2 Trinity (Euless, Tex.) was not amongst last season's final rankings, but finished 15-1 last season as they won 5A state championship. They return 11 starters, including running back Dontrayevous Robinson (17 rushing TDs, 6.5 yards a carry) and quarterback Denarius McGhee (1,800 yards passing).
