The controversy surrounding the Chinese women’s gymnastics team may start heating up again after evidence appears to support the allegation that the squad included at least one member who was underage.
According to a computer expert who searched through cached pages on the Internet there are official documents compiled by the General Administration of Sport of China that listed the birth date of He Kexin as Jan. 1, 1994, contrary to the Jan.1, 1992 date printed on the passport submitted to the International Olympic Committee to gain entry into the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
As stated by the rules of the IOC all athletes participating in the games must be at least 16-years-old in the Olympic year. The IOC ruled that He’s passport was evidence that she was of age yet many have questioned the eligibility of several Chinese gymnasts and have claimed birthdays were changed to field the best team.
He Kexin won the gold medal on the women’s uneven bars and was part of the Chinese women’s team that edged the United States for the overall gold medal in team competition.
The recent discovery of documents submitted by The General Administration of Sport of China were made by a computer expert at the U.S. computer security firm Intrepidus Group. That search found the official documents among cached pages on the Chinese search engine Baidu.
The allegations of age-changing have been adamantly denied by China and according to the IOC the matter was closed.
