2008 Beijing Olympics: Team USA Battles Argentina in Basketball Semis Friday

The U.S. men's basketball team will battle Argentina in the semifinals of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing on Friday at 10:15 a.m.

The game will be broadcasted on NBC. It follows the Spain-Lithuania semifinal, which will be played at 8 a.m.

Argentina defeated the U.S., 89-81, in the semifinals of the 2004 Athens Olympics despite Stephon Marbury's Olympic record 31 points. The U.S. was forced to play in the bronze medal game (which they won) while Argentina went on to win the gold medal.

The U.S. is led by Dwyane Wade, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony. Wade entered the playoffs ranked eighth in scoring (16.2) behind Argentina's shooting guard Manu Ginobili (19.6) and power forward Luis Scola (19.2).

Ginobili and Scola are joined by fellow NBA players Fabricio Oberto at center, Andres Nocioni at small forward and Carlos Delfino off of the bench. Pablo Prigioni, who plays for Spain's TAU Ceramica, starts for Argentina at point guard.

Bryant will have the defensive assignment to guard Ginobili, matching the U.S. team's best defender against Argentina's best offensive player. Team USA will start Wade, James, Anthony and Dwight Howard, but will frequently substitute players due to Argentina's lack of depth.

Team USA is averaging a tournament-high 105.2 points per game, while Argentina has had the second-best defense (behind USA), allowing 73.2. The Americans lead all teams in rebounds, assists, steals and blocks, while Argentina has committed the fewest turnovers of any team.
