2008 Beijing Olympics: IOC to Investigate Allegations Concerning Age Discrepancy of Chinese Gymnast He Kexin

After already saying the matter was closed the International Olympic Committee has reversed course and launched an investigation into allegations that Chinese authorities fabricated the age of star gymnast He Kexin in order to make her eligible for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

He Kexin was a key member of the Chinese women’s gold medal winning squad as well as the gold medal winner of the uneven bars. Before the Beijing Games even began China was accused of falsifying passports of several gymnasts to guarantee them eligibility in the Olympics.

China vehemently denied those claims and the IOC originally stated that the passports that documented their age was enough proof and considered the matter closed. On Thursday more evidence surfaced that those passports may have contained false birthdates, specifically the passport of He Kexin.

According to an investigation launched by a computer expert at the U.S. computer security firm Intrepidus Group there was evidence that the General Administration of Sport of China changed He’s birth date from Jan. 1, 1994 to Jan. 1, 1992. That evidence was found on cached pages in the Chinese search engine Baidu which contained two documents which proclaimed the gymnast was 14-years-old.

IOC rules state that women gymnasts must be at least 16-years-old in the Olympic year.

With the latest round of evidence the IOC was facing added pressure to investigate the matter and told the London Times that they would investigate the cover up.

It is unclear how the IOC would handle the situation if they did discover He’s age had been falsified and how that would affect the team gold medal won by the Chinese squad and He’s individual gold.
