2008 Beijing Olympics Results: United States Beats Russia to Advance to Gold Medal Match in Men’s Volleyball

The United States won a dramatic five set match against Russia 25-22, 25-21, 25-27, 22-25,  in men’s volleyball on Friday to advance to the gold medal match where they will face the winner of the Brazil v. Italy contest to be played later in the day.

It appeared as if the Americans would cruise past the world’s number two squad but Russia battled back to capture sets three and four and then climbed back from a 6-3 deficit in the fifth set to tie the score 7-7.

Russia actually moved in front 12-11 but the U.S. rattled off two straight to take the lead 13-12 and after each side traded points the Americans had match point and made good.

The gold medal match will be played on Saturday night at 10:00 p.m. ET. This will be the first time the United States has played in a gold medal match in men’s volleyball in 20 years.
