Russia Says Withdrawal of Military Forces in Georgia is On Schedule

While Russia has said their withdrawal of troops from neighboring country Georgia is on schedule, they maintain they will leave a military presence near the breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia to ensure the safety of Russian citizens in those territories.

Russia has insisted they would establish a “permanent presence” within Georgia, a move that would violate a peace agreement deal signed by both countries last week. In that agreement both countries agreed to move troops back to their original positions prior to the conflict that began Aug. 7.

Moscow has said their continued presence would be comprised of peacekeepers, something Georgia is strongly against.

There have been serious issues concerning how the conflict would end as a resolution introduced by France that suggested Russia recognize Georgia’s territorial integrity has been rejected by Moscow while the Russian resolution has been heavily criticized by UN member nations.

On Friday Russia continued to move troops out of areas deep inside Georgia and have insisted they would finish the withdrawal by the end of night. Troops have already begun to set up checkpoints along the borders of South Ossetia and Abkhazia

Georgia’s President Mikhail Saakashvili has vowed to never allow Russia to annex his country’s territory, something he believes Russia is attempting to do with the breakaway regions.
