2008 Beijing Olympics Results: Cuba Defeats USA, Advances to Baseball Final

Cuba defeated the United States, 10-2, to advance to the gold medal game in baseball in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

Alexei Bell hit a three-run home run in the eighth inning solidified the win for the Cuban national team. Ariel Pestano followed up with his own eighth inning three-run homer.

Alfredo Despaigne hit his second homer against the U.S. this tournament and Frederich Cepeda also hit a homer in the sixth inning. 

Third baseman Yulieski Gourriel is considered the leader of the Cuban team and is their biggest star. It is reported that if he were to defect, he would be one of the top picks in the MLB draft. Gourriel helped to lead the team to the gold medal in the 2004 Athens Olympics and silver in the 2006 World Baseball Classic.

U.S. starting pitcher Stephen Strassburg got caught in the Cuban onslaught in his first game since having a no-hitter through seven innings against The Netherlands last Thursday.

The USA team could not get redemption from their 5-4, 11 inning loss to Cuba last Friday when their star Jayson Nix was injured and forced to sit out of the remainder of the tournament.

The U.S. team will play in the bronze medal game against Japan as Cuba moves on to defend their gold medal against South Korea. Cuba has won three of the last four Olympic gold medals since baseball entered the games in 1992. Their only loss was to the United States in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

The U.S. defeated Japan 4-2 on Wednesday while South Korea beat Cuba 7-4 on Tuesday. South Korea is the only undefeated team in the Olympic baseball tournament.
