2008 Beijing Olympics Results: USA Basketball Team Advances to Gold Medal Game, Defeats Argentina
The U.S. men's basketball team advances to the gold medal game after defeating Argentina, 101-81, in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.
Team USA, who has been dubbed "The Redeem Team", got their redemption as they beat the team that defeated them in the 2006 World Championships.
The U.S. team opened the game on a tear, leading Argentina 30-11 after the first quarter. However, Argentina surged back, closing the gap to just nine points at halftime.
Carmelo Anthony scored 21 points to lead the U.S. team, which had seven players in double figures. Anthony shot 13-of-13 from the free-throw line.
Chris Bosh added 11 points and 11 rebounds, LeBron James added 15, Dwyane Wade added 12 and Dwight Howard added 10 points and nine rebounds.
Manu Ginobili was held to just two points, but Luis Scola picked up the slack, leading Argentina with 28 points and 12 rebounds. Carlos Delfino had 17 points and seven rebounds. Ginobili entered the game as the leading scorer in the Olympic tournament with 20.3 points per game.
The U.S. team will now face Spain in the gold medal game on Sunday at 2:30 a.m. EST on NBC. Team USA defeated Spain 119-82 in the preliminary round last Saturday. James led with 18 points and eight assists.
Lithuania will play Argentina for the bronze medal at 1 a.m. EST.
