Pakistan’s PPP Party Nominates Asif Zardari to be New President

Pakistan’s PPP party has nominated its leader Asif Zardari to be the country’s new president, replacing Pervez Musharraf who resigned earlier this week.

While the PPP nominated Zardari it will be up to the coalition government to decide who gains the post and PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif has expressed little support for Zardari.

Both men have different opinions on the reinstatement of judges dismissed by Musharraf last November. While Sharif wants all Supreme Court judges back, Zardari has been less than committed to such a prospect. The PPP’s fear lies in the reinstatement of 60 judges, including ex-Supreme Court chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.

The reinstatement of Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry could potentially lead to the overturning of an amnesty granted to Zardari and Bhutto by Musharraf. If that amnesty was rescinded Zardari could face long-standing corruption charges.

Sharif had vowed to pull the PML-N, the second largest party in the coalition, out of the fragile government if all the judges weren’t reinstated but after talks with other coalition members he has softened his stance and agreed to allow parliament to hold debates next week concerning the issue.

Zardari has not accepted his party’s nomination, saying he would have an answer in 24 hours.

The election commission announced the presidential vote would be held on September 6 with the president being selected by the members of the two houses of parliament and the four provincial assemblies.
