2008 Beijing Olympics Results: Final Medal Count Favors United States, China Wins Gold Medal Battle
The 2008 Beijing Olympics has wrapped up and the United States finished the Games with the overall medal lead with 110 gold, silver and bronze medals while China was a close second with an even 100 medals. China did come away with the gold medal lead as more than half of their overall total, 51, were for athletes that stood atop the medal stage.
China captured those gold medals in a variety of events but they displayed a dominance in both weightlifting, gymnastics and diving where they earned a total of 25 gold medals. The Chinese also earned multiple gold medals in trampoline, boxing, shooting, table tennis, judo and badminton.
As for the Americans, 12 of their 36 gold medals were earned in swimming with Michael Phelps leading the charge winning an Olympic record eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The U.S. also added multiple gold medals in basketball, gymnastics, beach volleyball, shooting and track & field.
