The fall-out from the resignation of former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf continues to hamper the country’s ability to move forward politically as the two main parties remain deadlocked on who should become the next president.
Last week the PPP nominated Asif Zardari, husband of the party’s former leader Benazir Bhutto. Bhutto was assassinated last December as she campaigned for the presidency. The choice of Zardari has angered the PML-N whose leader, Nawaz Sharif, has now declared his party would pull out of the country’s coalition government.
While both sides were to come to an agreement for a nominee in the Sept.6 presidential election it now appears likely that both the PPP and PML-N parties will place separate nominees in the election.
One of the main sticking points between the PPP and PML-N is the handling of former judges that had been dismissed by Musharraf. Nawaz has called for the reinstatement of all judges while the PPP has expressed hesitation in such an act, fearing that could open the door to Zardari being prosecuted on long-standing corruption charges.
Musharraf issued an amnesty last year that relieved Zardari of the charges but with the judges reinstated, that amnesty could be declared illegal and the PPP leader could face prosecution.
The battle between Zardari and Sharif is in direct contrast to the two leaders actions last week when they worked together to threaten Musharraf with impeachment, leading to his resignation.
