Michelle Obama Gives Hopeful Speech at 2008 DNC on Monday

Michelle Obama, the wife of the presumptive Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, addressed the crowd during a speech at the 2008 Democratic National Convention on Thursday.

Obama was introduced to the DNC audience by her brother Craig Robinson, the head basketball coach of Oregon State University. Her mother Marian Robinson was also in attendance.

Obama introduced herself as a sister, daughter, wife and mother as she described how all four assets are intertwined in this election. She described how her brother was her role model and their middle-class background growing up on the South Side of Chicago.

Obama discussed how she met Barack and thought he had a funny name, but that she began to learn that they were raised on similar values, something that drew her to him. She discussed how he started his post-law school career working to get better benefits and job opportunities for middle-class workers who lost their jobs at steel plants.

During his work with these workers, Barack gave a speech urging the workers to "bridge the gap between what the world is and what the world should be". Obama then urged the DNC audience to do the same as they elect her husband Barack as President of the United States.

When speaking about the opportunities that America offers its citizens, Obama silenced critics of her patriotism. "That is why I love this country," said Obama.

"Barack doesn't care where you're from, or what your background is, or what party—if any—you belong to," she said. "That's not how he sees the world. He knows that thread that connects us, our belief in America's promise, our commitment to our children's future, is strong enough to hold us together as one nation even when we disagree."

Obama also praised Sen. Joe Biden, Barack's VP candidate, and Sen. Hillary Clinton as she "put those 18 million cracks in the glass ceiling, so that our daughters—and sons—can dream a little bigger and aim a little higher."
