Russian President Dmitry Medvedev recognized the vote of parliament and declared his country would recognize the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, the two breakaway Georgian regions that sparked a brief war between Russia and its neighbor to the south.
Medvedev’s declaration ignored the West’s call to respect Georgia’s “territorial integrity” and pushed the possibility of a greater conflict to a new level.
In an announcement made by Medvedev the President stated, “I have signed decrees on the recognition by the Russian Federation of the independence of South Ossetia and the independence of Abkhazia.”
The new Russian leader indicated the decision may not be popular with other countries but, as he stated, “it is the sole chance of saving people's lives.”
Georgia has appealed to the West for help as they have called Russia’s move an attempt to annex the breakaway regions. Both South Ossetia and Abkhazia have declared themselves to be independent from Georgia but that independence has never been recognized by Georgia or the West.
While Georgia has expressed outrage at Medvedev’s announcement the residents in the two breakaway regions celebrated the news. Russia has maintained a military presence in the two regions as well as in a buffer zone that would prevent Georgian troops from moving in.
On Aug. 7 Georgia troops entered South Ossetia leading to Russian forces countering with airstrikes and ground troops marching deep inside Georgia, drawing heavy criticism from the United States, France, the UK and other Western nations.
