Sen. Edward "Ted" Kennedy Gives Surprising Speech at 2008 DNC

Sen. Edward "Ted" Kennedy made a surprise yet poignant speech at the 2008 Democratic National Convention on Monday.

Kennedy, who recently underwent brain surgery to remove a malignant tumor, declared that there was "new hope" for the nation. He stated that he wants Obama to sit in the White House and for him to return to the Senate.

Due to his health, many people were unsure if Kennedy could physically make it to the DNC in Denver. However, Kennedy was persistent that he would attend the momentous occasion. "Nothing is going to keep me away from this special gathering tonight," said Kennedy.

Kennedy rode the wave of hope that was prevalent during Obama's campaign. "Yes, we can, and finally, yes, we will," said Kennedy.

"Barack Obama will be a commander-in-chief who understands that young Americans in uniform must never be committed to a mistake, but always for a mission worthy of their bravery," said Kennedy. "We are told that Barack Obama believes too much in an America of high principle and bold endeavor, but when John Kennedy called of going to the moon, he didn't say it's too far to get there. We shouldn't even try."

Before Kennedy's remarks, his niece, Caroline Kennedy, introduced a video that paid tribute to his life and the causes he has fought for throughout his more than 45-year tenure in the Senate.

Several members of the Kennedy family have been very supportive of Obama. Caroline Kennedy, the daughter of former President John. F. Kennedy, was tapped to join the committee, along with former Fannie Mae CEO James Johnson and former Deputy Attorney General Eric Holder, to select the vice presidential candidate for Obama.
