Stocks Move Higher on Positive Economic Data

Wall Street edges higher after two economic reports came in much better than the market expected.

The Commerce Department report said new home sales rose 2.4 percent in July, a much better performance than the 1 percent drop economists forecast. And the Conference Board said its consumer confidence index came in at 56.9, much better than expectations for a reading of 53.

The Dow Jones Industrials is up about 42 at the 11,428 level, recovering somewhat from an earlier, larger drop. The other major indexes are modestly higher.

Light, sweet crude for December delivery rose $1.13 to $116.24 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange as traders watched the progress of Hurricane Gustav.

In currency trading, the euro dropped sharply against the U.S. dollar. The euro traded at $1.4638, compared to $1.4754 late Monday.

Treasury prices fell. The benchmark 10-year note was off 5/32 to yield 3.801 percent.

Monday’s Top Performing SmallCapVoice.com stocks:

ICP Solar Technologies Inc. (OTC BB: ICPR) was a SmallCapVoice.com top performer for 8/25/08 moving up over 14% on trading volume of 21,810 shares.

Today’s SmallCapVoice.com Hot Stock to Watch:

GWS Technologies, Inc. (OTC BB: GWSI) is today’s hot stock to watch.

GWS Technologies, Inc., an alternative energy technology company developing and marketing solar and wind-powered renewable energy products and solutions, today announced that it is accepting project submissions from businesses and individuals in the agricultural, forestry, waste management and renewable energy sectors for its carbon offset program.

Carbon offsets help individuals and businesses participate in becoming “carbon neutral” by investing in alternative energy projects like wind farms or solar power generation. By purchasing carbon offsets, consumers and businesses can reduce their “carbon footprint,” which is the total contribution to the carbon dioxide level from such activities as industrial energy consumption, home energy consumption, driving and flying.

The current American carbon market is unique because there is no federal legislation providing a comprehensive framework for carbon management. Experts predict that the North American carbon market could become a $1 Trillion per year market.
