Segway owner Jimi Heselden died Sunday in a freak accident involving an off-road Segway. According to reports, Heselden was riding one of the two-wheeled, motorized scooters on his West Yorkshire estate when the vehicle rolled off a cliff and into the River Wharfe below.
"Officers were called to the incident around 11:40 a.m. following a call from a member of the public," West Yorkshire police said in a statement.
Heselden, 62, and the scooter were pulled from the river. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say the accident is “not believed to be suspicious.”
Heselden, who founded the Leeds based company Hesco Bastion, bought Segway in 2009. Hesco Bastion confirmed Heselden’s death in a statement saying, "It is with great sadness that we have to confirm that Jimi Heselden OBE, has died in a tragic accident near his home in West Yorkshire.”
