Mexican Politician in Critical Condition After Shooting

Authorities in Mexico say Ricardo Solis Manriquez, the mayor elect of the town of Gran Morelos in Chihuahua state, is in critical condition after being shot at least 5 times Friday night. Gunmen shot Manriquez at a veterinary clinic. Police believe an organized crime group could be responsible.

Manriquez, who was set to take office on October 9, is being treated at a local hospital. A spokesman for the attorney general’s office in Chihuahua said Manriquez was shot once in the head.

Friday’s attack is the latest in a series of attacks on Mexican politicians. At least 4 mayors have been killed in the past two months. Last Thursday, Prisciliano Rodriguez Salinas, mayor of Doctor Gonzalez in Nuevo Leon state, was killed on his ranch by gunmen.
