A skiff packed with about 85 people overturned in the Gulf of Aden Monday while getting aid from a United States Navy vessel.
The Combined Maritime Forces says a South Korean warship spotted the skiff and asked the USS Winston S. Churchill to aid those on board, which included 75 Ethiopians and 10 Somalis. The skiff capsized after its passengers rushed to one side when U.S. sailors began distributing supplies.
Sailors and crew from an Australian patrol aircraft rescued 61 of the skiff’s passengers. Thirteen others drowned and eight others are still missing.
The incident is under investigation.
