Olympic Swimmer Dara Torres to Undergo Arthroscopic Surgery
Dara Torres, one of the biggest stars of the recent 2008 Beijing Olympics, will undergo surgery on Wednesday.
Torres, 41, will undergo arthroscopic surgery in Florida to repair damage to her right shoulder. Torres won three silver medals in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, giving her a total of 12 Olympic medals.
Torres will endure a distal clavicle resection, a procedure of shaving down the outer end of the collarbone to smooth it down. The operation will be performed by Dr. Joseph Chalal of Performance Orthopedics of the Palm Beaches.
In the 2008 Olympics, Torres became the first Olympic swimmer to compete in five games and the first woman swimmer to compete after the age of 40. During the Olympic Games, Torres broke her own American record, set when she was just 15. Her total of 12 Olympic medals spans 24 years over three decades: 1984 (when she was 17), 1988, 1992, 2000 and 2008.
