Joseph Edward Duncan Sentenced to Death for Child Killings

Joseph Edward Duncan III was sentenced to death Wednesday for the 2005 kidnapping, torture, sexual abuse and murder of Dylan Groene. Duncan stalked the boy’s family and killed four of its five members.

After three hours of deliberation, a federal grand jury ruled that Duncan should be executed for the murders. The recommendation was binding on U.S. District Judge Edward Lodge.

Duncan acted as his own attorney during his trial. He pleaded guilty to murdering Dyan, 13-year-old Slade Groene, the children’s mother Brenda Groene and her fiancé Mark in their home. Only Shasta Groene, 8, survived.

Duncan killed Slade, Brenda and Mark before kidnapping Dylan and Shasta. He took the children into the Montana wilderness and sexually abused and tortured them for several weeks. Duncan shot Dylan in the head as Shasta watched.

He showed no reaction as the verdict was read.
