With no solid resolution in place to solve the ongoing conflict between Russia and Georgia the European Union has declared they would consider imposing sanctions against the Russians but remain hopeful the crisis could be solved through negotiations.
While Russia agreed to remove military troops from Georgia, those forces have remained in the breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia as well as in buffer areas that would prevent Georgian troops from entering those regions.
Earlier this week, backed by a unanimous parliamentary vote, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, a move that angered many Western nations. Russia has faced growing pressure from the West to respect Georgia’s “territorial integrity” which includes the two regions.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy has been attempting to broker a deal with Moscow and had instituted a peace-deal that ended the military aggression between Russia and Georgia. As part of that deal Russia was to pull its troops back to their positions prior to Aug. 7, the date Georgia troops marched into South Ossetia.
Despite signing the deal Russia has refused to completely remove their troops, maintaining their presence in the two regions was their obligation to Russian citizens living there. Medvedev has also accused Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili of carrying out “ethnic genocide” in South Ossetia and Russia was there to protect their sovereignty.
On Monday an emergency EU summit will be called to reassess their current relationship with Russia and decide what actions need to be taken to solve the crisis.
