Floods in Northern India Leave Millions Displaced

Flooding in the northern state of Bihar in India has left at least 55 dead and displaced more than two million people in what Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has called a “national calamity.”

Singh toured the devastated area in a helicopter, witnessing the massive flooding caused by the Kosi River breaching its banks. The flooding has destroyed roads and railway tracks and compromised electricity and water supplies.

The rising waters have led to mass evacuations with many of the residents being placed in temporary shelters. Those shelters are ill equipped for the massive numbers and now fears have set in that diseases could set in.
