Stocks Move Higher on Strong GDP report

Stocks extended their advance in early trading Thursday following a better-than-expected reading on the nation's economy and a drop in jobless claims.

The Commerce Department said gross domestic product rose at an annual rate of 3.3 percent for the April-June period, as a weaker dollar helped boost U.S. exports. That exceeded the government's initial estimate of a 1.9 percent increase as well as economists' forecast of a 2.7 percent gain.

In the first hour of trading, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 81.67, or 0.71 percent, to 11,584.18 after rising nearly 90 points Wednesday.

Broader stock indicators also rose. The Standard & Poor's 500 index advanced 9.06, or 0.71 percent, to 1,290.72, and the Nasdaq composite index rose 12.92, or 0.54 percent, to 2,395.38.

Bonds fell. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note, which moves opposite its price, rose to 3.81 percent from 3.77 percent late Wednesday. The dollar was mixed against other major currencies, while gold prices rose.

Light, sweet crude rose $1.15 to $119.30 on the New York Mercantile Exchange as Tropical Storm Gustav churns toward the Gulf of Mexico on a course that could collide with oil and gas platforms.
