Moqtada Sadr has ordered members of his Mehdi Army militia to continue observing the ceasefire he first ordered one year ago. Considered one of the most influential Shia clerics in Iraq, Sadr has extended the truce indefinitely and said anyone violating the ceasefire would not be considered a member of the Mehdi Army.
Rather than order his 60,000-strong militia to take up arms against the foreign presence in Iraq, Sadr has encouraged his followers to stage peaceful protests and take part in cultural activities.
At one time Sadr’s Shia movement was considered one of the most influential and powerful forces in Iraq but has suffered numerous setbacks after being targeted by military operations.
Sadr’s decision to extend the ceasefire comes just days after Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki announced the possibility all foreign troops could be out of the country by 2011.
