Tropical Storm Gustav Could Hit Jamaica as Hurricane

Having already devastated parts of Haiti and Dominican Republic with massive flooding and mud slides Hurricane Gustav now sits just off the coast of Jamaica. Downgraded to a tropical storm, Gustav is rapidly gaining strength and could hit the island of nearly 3 million as a renewed hurricane.

Gustav had sustained winds of 70 mph as it sat about 80 miles east of Kingston but could approach the 74 mph winds that classify a Category1 hurricane.

At least 22 people were killed in Haiti and the Dominican Republic when Hurricane Gustav hit Hispaniola earlier this week. Now meteorologists are predicting Gustav will pass over Jamaica and head towards the Gulf of Mexico where it could develop into a Category 3 hurricane or stronger before making landfall anywhere between south Texas and Florida.
