Metro Atlanta's Clayton County Schools Lose Accreditation

Clayton County School District, a suburban county of metropolitan Atlanta, GA, lost its accreditation, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools announced Thursday.

Clayton County, which encompasses the world's busiest airport Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, becomes just the third county in the last 40 years to lose its accreditation. The county failed to meet eight of nine improvement mandates.

Prior to the decision by SACS to remove the county's accreditation, Judge Michael Malihi of the Office of State Administrative Hearings recommended that Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue immediately remove four Clayton County school board members for violating the state's Open Meetings act and the state ethics code.

Malihi issued an executive order to remove Michelle Strong, Sandra Scott, Yolanda Everett, and Lois Baines-Hunter from the board.

The association issued a report in February calling Clayton County's school board "dysfunctional" and "fatally flawed." The district had until Sept. 1 to overhaul the system.

SACS put the Clayton County school district on probation five years ago, and could have put the district on a one-year probation again this time.

Clayton County schools serve 50,000 K-12 students in the metro Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area.
