2008 U.S. Open Results: Julie Coin Shocks No. 1 Seed Ana Ivanovic in Second Round

It has been more than 40 years since a number one seed has been bounced from the women’s U.S. Open in the second round but on Thursday Julie Coin ended that streak after stunning Ana Ivanovic 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to advance to the third round.

Coin, the 188^th ranked women’s tennis player in the world, looked like the world’s number one player in the third set when she managed to overcome a 40-0 hole in the fifth game to hold serve. After winning that game she moved up 3-2 and then rattled off ten straight points to bury Ivanovic.

The 25-year-old Frenchwoman had never qualified for a Grand Slam event prior to the 2008 U.S. Open.
