2008 U.S. Open Results: Julie Coin Shocks No. 1 Seed Ana Ivanovic in Second Round

It has been more than 40 years since a number one seed has been bounced from the women’s U.S. Open in the second round but on Thursday Julie Coin ended that streak after stunning Ana Ivanovic 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to advance to the third round.

Coin, the 188th ranked women’s tennis player in the world, looked like the world’s number one player in the third set when she managed to overcome a 40-0 hole in the fifth game to hold serve. After winning that game she moved up 3-2 and then rattled off ten straight points to bury Ivanovic.

The 25-year-old Frenchwoman had never qualified for a Grand Slam event prior to the 2008 U.S. Open.
