Mexican authorities fear the death toll from an early morning landslide in the state of Oaxaca could reach 1,000. Oaxaca Governor Ulises Ruiz said a hill in the Santa Maria Tlahuiltotepec municipality collapsed and buried and estimated 300 homes. The hill was about 650 feet wide.
"We're talking about some 300 homes affected," Ruiz said. "We don't have the exact number of those affected. But the death toll could reach as many as 500 or 600, even 1,000."
Military teams, police and medial workers were sent to the area to begin rescue operations. The area has been battered by heavy rains over the past two weeks. An estimated 12 inches of rain has fallen within the past 3 days. More rainfall is expected in the next 2 days.
