The South Carolina Gamecocks looked like the team that dropped their last five games of the 2007 campaign in the first half of their 2008 home opener but after making some halftime adjustments they came out looking like the team that they have been billed as and pounded the N.C. State Wolfpack 34-0 on Thursday night.
While South Carolina’s defense did its job throughout the first half the offense looked anemic as quarterback Tommy Beecher tossed three interceptions and the Gamecocks went into halftime with a 3-0 lead courtesy of a Ryan Succup 29-yard field goal with 20 seconds left on the clock.
Things turned around quickly in the second half for the South Carolina offense as they put the ball in the endzone on their first drive on a Mike Davis 1-yard TD run. Beecher continued to struggle though and tossed his fourth interception of the game but the South Carolina defense continued to do its job and the Gamecocks led 13-0 heading into the fourth
South Carolina’s head coach Steve Spurrier went with Chris Smelley at quarterback in the final frame and the sophomore rewarded his coach with a pair of TD tosses and finished the game 5/5 for 92 yards.
South Carolina finished with 369 yards despite the four turnovers while the defense forced the Wolfpack into four turnovers and just 138 total yards.
The Gamecocks will have their chance to get some revenge next week when they face Vanderbilt, the team that started South Carolina's five game slide last year.
